Istanbul Airport, the rising star of global aviation, has broken yet another record with its triple runway system. According to a statement by Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, 81 aircraft took off within just one hour on 2 July 2025. This remarkable performance marked a historic milestone in operational efficiency for the airport.
Operational Capability Shared by Only a Few Airports Worldwide
The “Triple Runway Operation,” which allows three runways to be used independently and simultaneously, is a capability achieved by only a handful of major airports around the world. With this proficiency, Istanbul Airport exceeds international standards in both air traffic management and environmental sustainability.
Goal: Shorter Taxi Times, Lower Carbon Emissions
According to Minister Uraloğlu, thanks to the triple runway system:
-
Departure taxi time will be reduced from 16 minutes to 15 minutes
-
Arrival taxi time will decrease from 13.8 minutes to 12 minutes
These improvements are expected to reduce flight durations by an average of 4 minutes, leading to lower fuel consumption and reduced carbon emissions.
Sustainability and Quieter Night Operations
Another key outcome of the triple runway operation is environmental impact. Night-time aircraft noise, caused by engine activity, is expected to be reduced by 20%. This reinforces Istanbul Airport’s role as a leader not only in operational excellence but also in environmental sustainability.
Target: 200 Million Passengers Annually
Following the record-setting performance, Minister Uraloğlu stated, “We are steadily moving toward our target of 200 million passengers per year for Istanbul Airport,” highlighting the airport’s ongoing capacity expansion.
