British Airways Plane Makes Emergency Landing in Venice: Passengers and Crew Fall Ill
Chaos erupted on a British Airways flight from London to Egypt after passengers and cabin crew fell ill, forcing an emergency landing in Venice. Passengers recounted the panic and fear they experienced during the incident.
61-year-old Melanie Wells and her 19-year-old daughter Imogen had departed from London Gatwick for an eight-day trip to Egypt. Shortly after boarding, Mrs. Wells reported feeling unwell. As more passengers and crew members became ill, the situation on board rapidly deteriorated, with claims that staff entered “full panic mode.”
For safety reasons, the plane made an emergency landing in Venice. Footage from the scene shows emergency response teams, equipped with respirators and protective suits, moving into the cabin. Wells said, “After about an hour and a half in the air, the crew started running back and forth in the aisle. When we landed, the plane was surrounded by police, ambulances, and fire crews. I was genuinely scared—it was complete chaos.”
British Airways stated that the diversion was a precaution following a technical issue. Engineers inspected the aircraft and cleared it to return to service the next day, reporting no toxic smoke or other hazards on board.
The plane’s return to London was delayed by eight hours. Wells described the fear and stress during the flight as leaving them “completely exhausted.” She added that the airline offered £2,130 for the cancelled flight and expenses but refused to reimburse £500 she lost for the first night’s accommodation.
