Australia’s national carrier Qantas reached a significant milestone on 25 September by adding its first two Airbus A321XLR aircraft to the fleet. Named “Great Ocean Road” (VH-OGA) and “Outback Way” (VH-OGB), the aircraft have begun operating on the Sydney–Melbourne and Sydney–Perth routes.
With this step, Qantas became the first airline in the Asia-Pacific region to operate the A321XLR and the fourth globally. The next-generation aircraft play a key role in the airline’s strategy to enhance customer experience and improve environmental performance.
More Comfort, Less Carbon Emissions
Compared with previous single-aisle models, the new A321XLRs feature a wider cabin, higher ceilings, larger windows, and more comfortable seating options. Passengers can also enjoy complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi, increased carry-on capacity, and an upgraded interior design.
From a sustainability perspective, the A321XLR delivers lower fuel burn per seat, helping to reduce carbon emissions.
Target Fleet of 48 Aircraft by 2026
Qantas will take delivery of its third A321XLR in November and plans to increase the number to seven by June 2026. With an additional order placed in August, the airline’s total A321XLR commitment has reached 48 aircraft.
Some of these aircraft will be configured with business-class cabins for long-haul operations. The new-generation aircraft joining the fleet are at the heart of the Qantas Group’s largest-ever fleet renewal programme, which includes over 200 firm orders.
