An incident aboard Fiji Airways flight FJ871 from San Francisco to Nadi highlighted the challenges of maintaining order and safety on flights. On 20 January, Stephanie Banks, a 69-year-old Australian passenger, caused disruption during the journey with abusive behaviour towards the crew and fellow passengers. Banks, who was reportedly intoxicated, hurled racist remarks and physically attacked flight attendants, leading the crew to restrain her using duct tape.
Tense Moments During the 11-Hour Flight
The trouble began mid-flight when Banks raised her voice. Witnesses reported that she was travelling with her husband but became agitated when she couldn’t locate his seat. A heated exchange with the crew ensued as Banks demanded to know his location, resorting to insults. During this time, she threw a cup at the crew and slapped a flight attendant’s hands.
Parents travelling with children expressed outrage as Banks’s expletive-filled rants escalated, prompting some to cover their children’s ears. Her disruptive behaviour persisted throughout the flight, and as the plane approached Nadi, the crew relocated her to the back of the cabin and physically restrained her with duct tape.
Airline Statement: Safety Measures Were Necessary
Following the incident, Fiji Airways issued a statement confirming that the passenger exhibited “malicious and non-compliant behaviour.” The airline explained that the cabin crew acted to ensure the safety and well-being of all passengers and upheld its commitment to providing a secure and comfortable travel experience. Fiji Airways further emphasised its zero-tolerance policy toward behaviours that jeopardise onboard safety.
Court Appearance in Fiji
Upon arrival in Nadi, Banks was handed over to local authorities. Fiji police confirmed that she was intoxicated and had caused significant disruption to fellow passengers.
On 23 January, Banks appeared before the Nadi Magistrates’ Court and was found guilty of disorderly conduct. She was fined 500 FJ$ (approximately 291 SGD) for her actions. While Banks was released on bail, the court imposed an international travel ban pending further investigation.
