Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) announced that Al-Jouf International Airport, located in the north of the country, was opened to service as of 19 January. The new airport has increased the region’s air transport capacity by more than nine times.
Passenger capacity rises to 1.6 million
Located near the city of Sakakah in northern Saudi Arabia, Al-Jouf International Airport will operate with an annual passenger capacity of 1.6 million. This represents an increase of more than nine times compared to the previous annual capacity of 175,000 passengers.
Officials stated that the new airport will not only strengthen regional and international air traffic but also contribute to economic and tourism activity.
Modern terminal and increased operational capacity
The new terminal building, constructed on a total area of 24,000 square metres, includes:
- 2 passenger boarding bridges for international and domestic flights,
- 7 departure gates and 4 arrival gates,
- 16 check-in counters, including two self-service units.
Thanks to the new infrastructure, it is aimed to manage passenger flow more quickly and efficiently.
Vision 2030 and sustainability emphasis
In a statement by GACA, it was emphasised that the project is aligned with the Aviation Programme under the National Transport and Logistics Strategy. The airport aims to develop air transport infrastructure across the Kingdom and improve service quality.
Officials also noted that the airport includes environmental sustainability measures aimed at reducing energy consumption, supporting Saudi Arabia’s sustainable development goals.
Trial flights to begin in February
Following the completion of operational procedures and technical tests, trial operations are planned to begin in February. After this process, the airport is expected to become fully operational at full capacity.

Ali Misrahi, CEO of the Second Airports Cluster, made the following remarks regarding the project:
“This project represents a continuation of the journey of development witnessed by the civil aviation sector. While continuing to serve citizens, regional residents and visitors, it contributes to the goals of Saudi Arabia Vision 2030.”
Double-digit growth in air traffic
Al-Jouf International Airport recorded a notable increase in air traffic in 2025. Passenger numbers exceeded 720,000, marking an 18.5% increase compared to the previous year.
According to data from aviation analytics firm OAG, airlines operating at the airport include Air Arabia, Flyadeal, Flydubai and Saudi Arabian Airlines.
