Maxar Satellite Images Detect Russian Aircraft It has been claimed that a Russian-made Su-57 fighter jet was sighted at an Iranian Air Force base. According to a report published by Army Recognition, the fighter jet, designated as “Felon” by NATO, was spotted at Bandar Abbas Air Base on Iran’s southern coast shortly after participating in the Aero India 2025 exhibition. The satellite images were released by Maxar Technologies.

Extended Stay at Iranian Base

Images captured by Maxar Technologies on 19 February show the Su-57 parked alongside two P-3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft, procured from the United States during the Shah’s era, and an Il-76 transport aircraft. Additional satellite images dated 21 February confirmed that the jet remained at the Iranian base for an extended period. The aircraft is believed to be the T-50-4 prototype, identified by the number “054 Blue,” commonly used in international demonstrations.

Strategic Partnership or Technical Malfunction?

The Su-57’s presence in Iran has sparked speculation regarding the purpose of its visit. While some reports suggest the jet experienced a delay in take-off due to engine failure, other sources claim the visit was part of a strategic cooperation between the two nations.

Strengthening Moscow-Tehran Military Ties

Russia’s continued reliance on Iranian support in its military operations in Ukraine is reinforcing military ties between the two countries. Notably, Iran’s supply of kamikaze drones and domestic production assistance stands out as a significant aspect of this collaboration.

A New Era for the Iranian Air Force

Should Iran consider acquiring the Su-57, it would mark a major modernisation of its air force. Currently, Iran’s fleet consists largely of American-made aircraft procured before the 1979 Islamic Revolution and ageing Russian models. The introduction of the Su-57 could substantially enhance the combat capabilities of the Iranian Air Force.
