The Hellenic Air Force has officially approved the upgrade program for its 38 F-16C/D Block 50 fighter jets to the F-16V Viper standard. This strategic move expands Greece’s ongoing F-16 modernization program and aims to bring the total fleet size to 121 modern F-16V aircraft. Athens positions this investment as a key element of the country’s long-term air superiority strategy.
Modernization Scope:
The modernization of the F-16C/D Block 50 aircraft will be equipped with the following advanced systems:
- AESA Radar (AN/APG-83 SABR): Enhanced detection capabilities with longer range, tracking, and target recognition.
- New Mission Computer and Avionics: Increased processing power and adaptation to modern combat scenarios, enhancing the aircraft’s tactical efficiency.
- Advanced Cockpit Layout: New multi-function displays and a modern pilot interface will make the cockpit design more intuitive and user-friendly.
- Data Link and Communication Packages: Aircraft will benefit from Link-16, satellite connections, and advanced navigation systems for more secure and efficient communication.
- Electronic Warfare and Self-Defense Enhancements: New electronic warfare systems will be integrated to improve threat detection and countermeasures.
This modernization will bring the Hellenic Air Force’s F-16 fleet to a performance level equivalent to the Block 52+/52M aircraft, allowing for a uniform, high-tech, and easy-to-maintain fleet.
Timeline and Implementation:
Modernization activities are planned to begin in 2028. Greece aims to strengthen its national defense industry through this program, with a significant portion of the work being carried out by the local aerospace company, Hellenic Aerospace Industry (HAI).
By 2025, the first 42 modernized F-16V aircraft will have been delivered, and the Block 52+ modernization program is already halfway through. With this new program, Greece aims to eliminate the diversity within its F-16 fleet, creating a more durable and powerful Viper fleet in terms of maintenance and operational efficiency.
