Cargo Plane Crash in Congo: Antonov An-26 Overruns Runway, Engine Catches Fire!
On January 21, 2025, a cargo plane of the Antonov An-26 type, operated by Air Kasai, was involved in a runway overrun incident at Kongolo Airport (KOO/FZRQ) in Tanganyika province, Democratic Republic of Congo. The plane, carrying a shipment of cigarettes from Goma, veered off the runway during landing and came to a stop on soft ground.
Engine Damage and Fire
Jean-Paul Ngongo Mboka Miba, the administrator of the Kongolo region, stated that the aircraft deviated from its normal landing path, causing the right propeller to jam and resulting in severe damage to engine number 2. Following the damage, the engine caught fire, but the quick response of local residents brought the fire under control. The cargo remained intact, and there were no injuries or fatalities among the crew.

After the fire broke out, local residents in Kongolo quickly mobilized to extinguish it. This rapid response prevented a larger disaster and protected the cargo section of the plane from significant damage.
Cause of the Accident Under Investigation
The exact cause of the incident remains unclear. Preliminary reports suggest that it was a landing accident. Authorities have launched an investigation, while Air Kasai has yet to issue an official statement regarding the crash.
