Is the SU-30SM2’s Advanced Technology a Message to NATO?

Amid growing regional security threats, Belarus has added advanced SU-30SM2 fighter jets to its arsenal as part of its ongoing military cooperation with Russia.

Belarus has taken a significant step in its strategic defence partnership with Russia. The Belarusian Ministry of Defence announced the delivery of a new batch of Sukhoi SU-30SM2 fighter jets from Russia. The move aims to bolster the country’s defence capabilities in response to rising military threats in the region.

The SU-30SM2 variants, equipped with upgraded engines, radar systems, and weapons, were manufactured at the state-owned Irkutsk Aviation Plant in Moscow. While no official statement was made regarding the number of aircraft delivered, Russian state news agency TASS reported that the jets will be used in advanced training for Belarusian pilots.

It was noted that most of the pilots underwent part of their training on Russian soil and completed an intensive programme focusing on flight and system operations.

Known by its NATO reporting name “Flanker,” the SU-30 fighter jet is renowned for its technical specifications. With a length of 22 metres and a wingspan of 15 metres, the aircraft is armed with a 30 mm automatic cannon, guided and unguided bombs, and various missile systems.

Boasting an internal fuel capacity of 9,400 kg and a maximum takeoff weight of 24,900 kg, the SU-30 can reach a top speed of 2,111 km/h. It is capable of operating at altitudes of up to 17,000 metres and has a range of 2,963 kilometres.
