AZAL Plane Crash: Kazakhstan Thanks ICAO!

Kazakhstan’s Deputy Prime Minister, Kanat Bozumbayev, expressed gratitude to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) for their support in investigating the AZAL plane crash during a meeting with Nicolas Rallo, Regional Director of the ICAO European and North Atlantic Office. Bozumbayev highlighted that the swift dispatch of experts to the crash site had made a significant contribution to the investigation process.

Swiftly Prepared Report Praised

During the meeting on 6 March 2025, the crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) aircraft near Aktau, Kazakhstan, was discussed. Deputy Prime Minister Bozumbayev thanked ICAO for promptly sending expert Thormodur Tormodsson to the crash site, stating, “On behalf of the government, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for the unwavering support provided to us, including backing our initiatives. We will continue our interaction with ICAO to fully complete this investigation.”

53-Page Report Earns Recognition

ICAO Regional Director Rallo commended Kazakhstan for producing a 53-page preliminary report in just one and a half months. He praised the efforts of Kazakhstan and the Investigation Commission, emphasising the importance of maintaining full compliance with the ICAO Convention throughout the investigation process.

Final Report to Be Released by Year-End

Kazakhstan’s Deputy Minister of Transport, Talgat Lastayev, announced during an evaluation meeting on 19 February 2025 that the final report is expected to be completed by the end of the year. He noted that, according to ICAO standards, aircraft accident investigations can take up to a year to conclude, stating, “Therefore, the final report on the (AZAL aircraft) investigation should be ready by December this year.”

38 Lives Lost in AZAL Plane Crash

The Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) flight J2-8243, an Embraer 190 passenger aircraft, crashed near the city of Aktau, Kazakhstan, on the morning of 25 December 2024. Of the 67 people on board, 38 lost their lives. The plane’s black box was recovered later that evening and sent to Brazil for examination.
