Wizz Air, one of Europe’s leading low-cost airlines, has announced its decision to reopen its base at Tuzla International Airport as of September 2025. The airline will station two aircraft at the base and launch nine new international routes.

The new destinations include Hamburg, Paris Beauvais, Cologne, Malmö, Gothenburg, Berlin, Charleroi, Hahn, and Vienna—which is already set to begin operations. These routes will complement Wizz Air’s existing services to Basel, Memmingen, and Dortmund, bringing the total number of destinations from Tuzla to 12.

Government Incentives and a Strategic Comeback

Wizz Air’s return follows a public call for airline subsidies issued by the government of Tuzla Canton. The government has allocated €615,000 in incentives for 2025 and up to €1 million annually from 2026 to 2028. According to the agreement, Wizz Air will receive €6 for each arriving passenger on the new routes.

Tuzla Canton’s Minister of Trade, Tourism and Transport, Almir Žilić, stated, “This development proves the effectiveness of the incentive model we’ve implemented. Wizz Air’s resumption of operations will not only enhance regional connectivity but also significantly contribute to our tourism and economic development goals.”

Strategic Expansion After a Difficult Period

Wizz Air had temporarily closed its Tuzla base in September 2023 due to supply chain challenges and prolonged winter fog, suspending twelve international routes. Of the nine newly announced routes, six (Berlin, Cologne, Gothenburg, Hahn, Malmö, and Vienna) are reinstated former destinations. However, other previously served cities like Billund, Eindhoven, Nuremberg, and Stockholm Skavsta will not be returning at this stage.

The airline began operating in Tuzla in 2013 and established a base in 2015, becoming the first low-cost carrier to set up a base in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Rising Competition

With Wizz Air’s return, the number of airlines operating from Tuzla Airport will increase to three. Other carriers currently offering flights from the region include Pegasus Airlines and AJet (AnadoluJet). Wizz Air’s comeback is expected to significantly expand affordable travel options from Bosnia and Herzegovina to Europe.
