Germany’s Ministry of Defence has addressed the recent report by US-based news outlet Politico, which claimed that “Berlin wants to expand its F-35 fighter jet fleet.” In a statement from the ministry spokesperson, it was clarified that allegations about the purchase of 15 additional F-35s were unfounded.
The spokesperson said:
“The Ministry of Defence has no plans for a new acquisition beyond the 35 F-35 fighter jets already contracted.”
What Did Politico Report?
According to Politico, Germany was considering purchasing 15 additional F-35 jets on top of its current order. The report claimed that Berlin aimed to increase its F-35 fleet from 35 to 50 aircraft as part of a broader effort to boost its military capabilities in line with NATO’s new defence goals.
The alleged plan was said to be shaped in response to NATO’s recently defined military and armament targets.
35 F-35s Already Ordered
Germany previously placed an order for 35 F-35 fighter jets from US defence giant Lockheed Martin. The purchase was made as part of a €100 billion military modernisation package for the German armed forces. These next-generation aircraft are intended to replace the German Air Force’s ageing Tornado fleet.
The Tornado jets are known as the only German aircraft currently capable of carrying the US tactical nuclear bombs stationed in Germany.
FCAS Tensions with France Continue
Meanwhile, Germany is cooperating with France on the Future Combat Air System (FCAS), a key pillar of Europe’s defence vision. However, according to European media reports, tensions between Berlin and Paris have risen due to France’s demand for an 80% share in the project.
