The US military transport aircraft departed from Rota Naval Air Base in Cádiz, Spain, and navigated through European airspace. After passing through Italian and Greek airspace, the C-17 entered Turkish airspace, manoeuvred over Aliağa, and completed its landing at the 2nd Main Jet Base in Çiğli, Izmir.
One of the Largest Military Transport Aircraft in the World
The C-17 Globemaster III, developed by the American aerospace company Boeing, is recognised as one of the largest military transport aircraft in the world in terms of carrying capacity. Known for its advanced avionics systems, high manoeuvrability, and long-range operational capability, the C-17 is actively used by the United States and seven other countries.
Its closest European counterpart is the Airbus A400M Atlas, which is also in the Turkish Air Force’s inventory.
Why Has It Arrived? A Military Exercise or Logistics?
No official statement has been made regarding the purpose of the aircraft’s arrival in Izmir. However, military sources suggest several possibilities. Experts speculate that the C-17 may have been transporting military personnel and equipment as part of a potential exercise. On the other hand, some claims suggest that the flight was related to defence industry equipment supply. However, experts emphasise that selecting Çiğli Base for such a transfer would be an unusual decision.
