The US military announced that two Navy pilots ejected and survived after a “friendly fire” incident over the Red Sea on Sunday. The event occurred amid escalating attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, highlighting the growing dangers in the region.
Pilots Survive the Incident
US Central Command confirmed that a two-seat F/A-18 Super Hornet, launched from the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman, was mistakenly targeted by the guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg. One pilot sustained minor injuries, but both crew members survived thanks to their ejection seats. Officials clarified that the incident was not due to enemy action and that a thorough investigation is underway.
Rising Tensions in the Region
The incident took place during a period of increased US airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen. Central Command reported that the strikes targeted a “missile storage facility” and a “command and control center” used by the Houthis. Meanwhile, Houthi media claimed that the strikes were concentrated around Sana’a and Hudaydah.
The Houthis assert that they have targeted approximately 100 commercial ships with drones and missiles in response to US and allied naval operations in the region. They further claim to have directed attacks at Western military vessels as part of their reaction to Israel’s ongoing operations in Gaza.
Investigation Ongoing
Despite USS Gettysburg being equipped with advanced radar and radio communication systems, the specifics of how this friendly fire occurred remain unclear. Central Command acknowledged that the incident underscores the need to review the Navy’s safety protocols.
An International Conflict Escalates
As the Houthis escalate drone and missile attacks on Israel, the Israeli military has carried out airstrikes on targets in Yemen. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned of strong retaliation against the Houthis, similar to other Iranian proxies.
This heightened regional tension is making the Red Sea increasingly perilous for global trade.
