Yemen, the Iran-backed Houthi movement announced that the United States and the United Kingdom conducted two airstrikes on the Hudaydah International Airport, which is under Houthi control. According to the Houthi-affiliated Al-Masirah television channel, the attacks targeted Hudaydah Airport. While detailed information on the outcomes of the strikes was not provided, neither the US nor the UK has made a statement regarding the incident.
Previous Attacks and the Status of the Airport
The Houthis reported that the US and UK carried out six airstrikes on Hudaydah Airport the previous day. The airport, closed to both domestic and international flights for nearly a decade, has been non-operational due to the ongoing conflict between the Yemeni government and the Houthis.
Statements and Threats from the Houthis
Houthi leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi stated today that, since November 2023, they have targeted 119 ships belonging to the US, Israel, and the UK in the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea, and the Indian Ocean, citing support for Gaza as the reason.
Situation in the Red Sea
Since October 31, 2023, in response to Israeli attacks in Gaza, the Houthis have been seizing and attacking commercial vessels belonging to Israeli companies off the coast of Yemen using drones and missiles. Following these actions, many shipping companies decided to halt their operations in the Red Sea.
“Operation Sentinel of Prosperity”
On December 18, 2023, the US announced the formation of a multinational “maritime task force” named “Operation Sentinel of Prosperity” to counter Houthi forces, citing threats to global maritime trade security. In response to the US and UK attacks, the Houthis declared that they would target all vessels from these two countries.
