Ukraine’s New Weapon “Tryzub” Makes Headlines Worldwide

As tensions escalate on the Russia-Ukraine front, a new laser weapon developed by Ukraine has gained significant attention in global media. According to Vadym Sukharevskyi, Commander of Ukraine’s Unmanned Aircraft Forces, in an interview with CNN International, this laser weapon can successfully hit targets more than two kilometers away.

“We Can Hit Targets from Two Kilometers”

Speaking at a defense summit in Kyiv, Sukharevskyi shared details about the laser weapon, named “Tryzub”:
“Today, we can shoot down aircraft flying at altitudes over two kilometers with this laser. It really works, and yes, we currently possess this technology.”

The commander added that Ukraine continues to work on enhancing the scale and capabilities of this weapon.

The Name “Tryzub” Reflects the National Emblem

The new laser weapon shares its name with Ukraine’s national emblem, a trident known as “Tryzub,” symbolizing independence and strength. The name reflects Ukraine’s determination to bolster its military power through technological innovation.

Experts Say “It’s Entirely Feasible”

Patrick Senft, a technical intelligence expert interviewed by CNN, stated that it is feasible for Ukraine to develop a directed-energy weapon (DEW).
Referring to the U.S. Navy’s Laser Weapon System (LaWS) as an example, Senft said, “Laser weapons operating at similar ranges have been developed before. Such technology can be produced by integrating commercial lasers with existing military systems.”

Effective Against Russian Drones

Senft highlighted that laser weapons are particularly effective against low-altitude, slow-moving drones often used by Russia. These drones’ sensitive components are vulnerable to laser energy. Notably, attack drones like the Shahed-136/Geran-2 are especially susceptible to being neutralized by such weapons.

However, the effectiveness of laser weapons is more limited against fast-moving or heat-resistant targets. Fabien Hoffmann noted that developing a laser system capable of countering unmanned aerial vehicles or missiles still presents some technical challenges.

Only a Few Countries Possess Such Weapons

CNN reported that laser weapons are currently part of the arsenals of only a few countries, including the United States, China, Israel, and the United Kingdom. The UK, for example, is working on the DragonFire laser weapon system, expected to be operational by 2027.

Trump Criticizes Biden on Ukraine Policy

Meanwhile, debates over U.S. policy on Ukraine continue. Former President Donald Trump criticized President Joe Biden’s decision to allow Ukrainian forces to use U.S.-made missiles for strikes deep into Russian territory. Trump indicated he would reverse this policy if reelected.
