Tragic Incident After Hajj: Two Passengers Die Simultaneously on Return Flight

A heartbreaking event occurred on 20 June 2025 involving a group of Hajj pilgrims from East Java, Indonesia, returning home via a Saudia (SV) flight. Shortly before landing at Juanda International Airport (SUB) in Surabaya, two elderly passengers passed away due to sudden medical complications during the flight.

“They Died Almost Simultaneously”

The deceased were identified as 67-year-old Hj. Mukatin Wakimin Samin and 85-year-old Hj. Salimah Deman Sadih, both residents of Bangkalan in East Java. Arif Rochman, Hajj and Umrah Coordinator at the Bangkalan Office of Religious Affairs, described the tragic nature of the event, stating, “They died almost at the same time.”

According to the group’s doctor, Anita Oktavia, Hj. Mukatin died due to hypertension, while Hj. Salimah suffered a heart attack. Both cases worsened due to turbulence encountered during the flight. Despite the efforts of the onboard doctor and fellow pilgrims after an emergency call, Mukatin lost consciousness and died within 15 minutes, followed by Salimah just five minutes later.

The bodies were sent to the Burneh area in Bangkalan for burial. These deaths brought the total number of fatalities among pilgrims from Bangkalan during the 2025 Hajj season to four.

Bomb Threat Hits Same Airline One Day Later: SV5688 Makes Emergency Landing in Kualanamu

On 21 June 2025, one day after the tragic flight, a bomb threat was reported on Saudia flight SV5688 operating from Jeddah to Surabaya. The Airbus A330, carrying 376 passengers, was diverted and made an emergency landing at Kualanamu International Airport (KNO) in North Sumatra.

The threat was detected by AirNav Indonesia in Jakarta and relayed to the pilot via Kuala Lumpur Air Traffic Control. The aircraft landed safely and was secured. All passengers underwent thorough security screening in the terminal.

Densus 88 Takes Over Investigation

Indonesia’s elite counterterrorism unit, Densus 88, assumed control of the investigation to determine the origin of the threat. Police spokesperson AKBP Mayndra Eka Wardhana stated that the bomb threat was handled in accordance with standard safety procedures and confirmed that no explosives were found on board.
