Turkish Airlines to Lease 6 Airbus A321neo Aircraft

BOC Aviation, one of the world’s leading aircraft leasing companies, has signed a significant agreement with Turkish Airlines (THY). The deal includes the delivery of six Airbus A321neo aircraft to Turkish Airlines by 2027, supporting the airline’s expansion and modernisation plans.

Turkish Airlines’ Fleet and Engine-Related Challenges

Turkish Airlines currently operates 66 Airbus A321neo aircraft and has an additional 199 on order. However, due to issues with the Pratt & Whitney PW1100G-JM engines, 35 of these aircraft are temporarily grounded. The engine problems have impacted the airline’s operations, leading to a compensation agreement with Pratt & Whitney in July.

According to aviation analytics company Cirium, these engine issues led to a 9.1% decrease in A321neo operations as of November 2023, with the number of flights dropping from 4,100 to 3,727 and resulting in a loss of 76,385 seats.

A321neo Performance and Key Routes

Turkish Airlines’ Airbus A321neo aircraft deliver strong performance, particularly on long-haul routes. Some of the airline’s busiest routes include:

  • Istanbul – Almaty: 2,444 miles
  • Istanbul – Bishkek: 2,331 miles
  • Istanbul – Addis Ababa: 2,306 miles
  • Istanbul – Marrakesh: 2,136 miles
  • Istanbul – Astana: 2,125 miles

Turkish Airlines’ Growth Strategy in the United States

As part of its international expansion, Turkish Airlines is also increasing its operations in the United States. The airline recently announced it will increase flights to Denver International Airport from three weekly round-trips to daily, raising its monthly seat capacity by approximately 8,000.

Denver is THY’s 14th U.S. destination, with a target to expand to 20 destinations by 2025. Turkish Airlines, the only carrier offering direct flights between Turkey and the U.S., aims to strengthen its presence in this market.

The Significance of the BOC Aviation Agreement

The agreement with BOC Aviation is seen as an important step for Turkish Airlines to strengthen its fleet and address engine-related operational challenges. The A321neo’s fuel efficiency and extended range will enhance the airline’s competitive edge on both short- and long-haul routes.
