Turkish Airlines’ New Flights Strengthen Turkey-Australia Relations

Australia’s Consul General in Istanbul, Tony Huber, highlighted that Turkish Airlines’ new flights to Australia present a significant opportunity to deepen ties and expand economic relations between the two nations.

Huber emphasized that Turkish Airlines’ extensive flight network facilitates increased travel by tourists and businesspeople between Australia and Turkey. He noted that these direct connections not only boost economic cooperation but also strengthen people-to-people relationships.

New Routes and Commercial Potential

Turkish Airlines has expanded its presence in Australia by adding Sydney flights to its existing Melbourne route. Huber underlined that this development would positively impact tourism and commercial collaborations. Describing Turkish Airlines as one of the largest flight networks globally, Huber noted that it offers valuable opportunities for Australian businesses.

He pointed out that the trade volume between Turkey and Australia remains modest at approximately 2-3 billion Australian dollars annually, with a balanced structure. Huber also mentioned that trade in sectors such as agriculture and aviation continues to grow despite the geographical distance between the two countries.

Air Cargo and Logistics Collaboration

Huber highlighted Turkish Airlines’ potential in cargo transportation, noting that the upcoming opening of Western Sydney Airport is expected to further boost interest in air cargo operations. He emphasized Turkey’s strong position in production and services, suggesting that this capacity could pave the way for new partnerships with Australia.

Collaboration in Education and Energy

Huber remarked on the dynamic exchange in education between the two countries. He noted that the commencement of direct Turkish Airlines flights has increased the number of Turkish students studying in Australia from a few hundred to 6,000-7,000.

In the energy sector, Huber pointed out Turkey’s strategic role with its natural gas pipelines and Australia’s significant natural gas reserves. He emphasized that technology sharing and partnerships in energy supply chains present crucial opportunities for both nations.
