Turkish Airlines Introduces Biometric Boarding System

Turkish Airlines (THY) has taken a significant step in digital transformation by launching a biometric travel system. Kerem Kızıltunç, Turkish Airlines’ Deputy General Manager of Information Technology, announced that the system, initially implemented in Miami and Boston, has reduced boarding times by up to 50%. He also revealed plans to extend the biometric touchless boarding system to cities like Seoul, İzmir, and Istanbul in the near future.

How the Biometric Boarding System Started

The initial steps toward implementing biometric boarding began in December 2022. The system was first tested through THY’s frequent flyer program, Miles & Smiles, in collaboration with Istanbul Airport (İGA). The pilot phase demonstrated a 50% improvement in airport operations, paving the way for the system’s broader rollout.

How Biometric Boarding Works

Miles & Smiles members can access the biometric boarding service by completing a few simple steps on their mobile devices. Travelers register through the Star Alliance or Turkish Airlines apps by uploading their details and taking a selfie to verify their passport and ID information. Once the registration is complete, members can seamlessly pass through biometric checkpoints at participating airports.

Expanding to New Airports

Following successful trials in Miami and Boston, Turkish Airlines plans to implement the biometric system at major hubs, including Seoul, İzmir, and Istanbul. Kızıltunç emphasized that the technology aims to enhance efficiency and streamline the boarding process, offering passengers a more convenient travel experience.
