Rising political and military tensions in the Middle East are leading to significant changes in the aviation sector. Turkish Airlines (THY) has altered its direct flights from Istanbul to Erbil due to escalating tensions between Israel and Iran.
As part of a security-driven decision, THY aircraft now land at Şerafettin Elçi Airport in Şırnak instead of flying directly to Erbil, Iraq. From there, passengers are transported by road via the Habur Border Gate and continue on to Erbil.
This temporary arrangement has been implemented to ensure passenger safety and to minimise potential risks in the regional airspace. While no specific timeline has been provided for how long this change will remain in effect, officials indicate it may continue depending on regional developments.
Increased Activity at Şırnak Airport
Following THY’s new route implementation, Şırnak Şerafettin Elçi Airport has seen a noticeable increase in activity. Authorities have stated that all necessary precautions have been taken at both the airport and the border crossing during this transitional period.
Turkish Airlines’ flight plans continue to be dynamically updated in response to developments in the region.
