Turkish Airlines Announces May 2024 Traffic Results

Turkish Airlines (THY) has shared its traffic results for May 2024 and the data for the January-May 2024 period. According to the announced results, while there was a slight decrease in the number of passengers in May, there was a significant increase in cargo transportation.

Decrease in Passenger Numbers, Increase in Transfer Passengers

In May 2024, Turkish Airlines’ total number of passengers decreased by 1.7% compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 7.2 million. Despite this decrease, the number of international-to-international transfer passengers increased by 3.6%, reaching 2.5 million.

The passenger load factor decreased by 2.1 points compared to the same period in 2023, reaching 79.8%. Despite this decrease, the domestic load factor was noteworthy at 84.2%, while the international load factor remained at 79.3%.

Continued Increase in Capacity

Total Available Seat Kilometers (ASK) was 19.9 billion in May 2023, and this figure increased by 7.3% to 21.3 billion in the same period of 2024. Turkish Airlines’ cargo and mail transport increased by 28.8%, reaching 174.4 thousand tons.

January – May 2024 Traffic Data

In the first five months of 2024, Turkish Airlines’ total number of passengers increased by 5.7% compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 32.8 million. During the same period, the number of international-to-international transfer passengers increased by 7%, reaching 12.6 million.

Slight Decrease in Load Factor

The passenger load factor in the January-May 2024 period decreased by 0.8 points compared to the same period in 2023, reaching 80.4%. The international passenger load factor was recorded at 80%, while the domestic passenger load factor was 83.8%.

Strong Growth in Capacity

Total Available Seat Kilometers (ASK) increased by 10.8% in the first five months of 2024, reaching 100 billion. During this period, the amount of cargo and mail transported increased by 33.7%, reaching 814.7 thousand tons. Additionally, the number of aircraft in the fleet rose to 456 by the end of May.

Regional Distribution

Looking at Turkish Airlines’ regional performance, the Far East region showed the most significant increase in both passenger and cargo transportation. The number of passengers transported to the Far East increased by 27.7% to 635,488, while the amount of cargo transported to this region increased by 34.2% to 60,398 tons.

  • Middle East: Passenger numbers decreased by 19.7%, cargo volume increased by 30.7%.
  • Europe: Passenger numbers increased by 9.8%, cargo volume increased by 36.6%.
  • Far East: Passenger numbers increased by 27.7%, cargo volume increased by 34.2%.
  • North America: Passenger numbers increased by 3.4%, cargo volume increased by 13.8%.
  • Africa: Passenger numbers increased by 2.1%, cargo volume increased by 17.5%.
  • South America: Passenger numbers increased by 3.2%, cargo volume increased by 14.7%.
  • Domestic: Passenger numbers decreased by 7.2%, cargo volume increased by 2.2%.
