Turkish Airlines and Qatar Airways have suspended all flights to and from Aden Adde International Airport (MGQ) following a security alert issued by the US Embassy in Somalia. The warning, published on 4 March 2025, cited credible intelligence regarding a “possible imminent attack” targeting various areas, including the airport.
Critical Security Alert from the US Embassy
The US Embassy highlighted that terrorist groups in Somalia continue to plan attacks involving car bombs, suicide bombers, and mortar fire. Such attacks could target high-traffic areas like airports, ports, government buildings, hotels, and shopping centres.
The embassy announced that all US personnel’s movements had been suspended until further notice and warned US citizens that terrorists in Somalia were planning kidnappings, bombings, and other attacks. The alert emphasised that attacks could often occur without prior notice, posing a significant risk to both civilians and foreign nationals.
Turkish Airlines and Qatar Airways’ Decision to Suspend Flights
Following the US Embassy’s security advice, Turkish Airlines and Qatar Airways, two international carriers operating in Somalia, immediately halted flights to Mogadishu. No announcements have been made regarding when flights will resume, but both airlines are expected to reassess the situation based on changes in security conditions.
