On October 18, 2024, a Turkish Airlines (THY) Airbus A321-200N aircraft experienced a tailstrike during landing at Dublin. The aircraft, registered as TC-LTL, was operating flight TK-1975 from Istanbul to Dublin when its tail touched the runway while landing on Dublin Airport’s runway 28L at 09:18 local time (08:18 UTC). After the incident, the aircraft did not exit the runway but instead performed a go-around to attempt another landing.
About 15 minutes later, the aircraft successfully landed on the same runway without further issues, and no injuries were reported. However, due to damage sustained to the tail, the return flight TK-1976 was canceled.
Details of the Incident and Its Impact on Flight Safety
THY’s Airbus A321N aircraft are among the most modern narrow-body jets, and incidents like tailstrikes, though rare, are significant from a flight safety perspective. Despite the second successful landing, such incidents are thoroughly investigated by both the airline and aviation authorities.
Tailstrikes typically occur when an aircraft approaches the runway at an incorrect angle or experiences a hard landing. The cancellation of the return flight following this incident is a standard procedure aimed at ensuring passenger safety and allowing for a thorough inspection of the aircraft.
