TOMTAŞ, Turkey’s first aircraft factory, has been revived 100 years after its founding. Established as the Turkish Aircraft and Engine Corporation (TOMTAŞ), this pioneering venture in the Republic’s aviation history has been reborn in 2023. This major transformation marks the beginning of a new era in the country’s defence and aerospace industries.
Strategic Rebirth in Kayseri
TOMTAŞ Aviation and Technology Inc. began operations in the Mimarsinan Organized Industrial Zone in Kayseri, in partnership with ASFAT, TUSAŞ, Erciyes Technopark, and TOMTAŞ Investment. This is not just a nostalgic revival but a strategic milestone in Turkey’s vision for indigenous and national technological development.
A New Ecosystem: 11 New Companies, High-Tech Leap
With TOMTAŞ back in operation, 11 new aviation firms have been established in Kayseri, focusing on aircraft maintenance, parts manufacturing, and advanced technological systems. The city is rapidly transforming into a strategic hub for defence and aerospace.
$63.5 Million Investment and 1,000 New Jobs
Coordinated by the Kayseri Metropolitan Municipality, the project’s first phase includes an investment of $63.5 million and the installation of 98 high-tech production machines. Once completed, this phase will create 1,000 skilled jobs.
Full Support for HÜRJET and Other National Projects
With 800,000 square metres allocated for production and R&D, TOMTAŞ will play a significant role in supporting national projects, particularly Turkey’s first jet aircraft, HÜRJET. Potential collaborations with global aerospace companies are also on the agenda.
200 Machines for TUSAŞ from Kayseri
During meetings in Ankara, TOMTAŞ and Kayseri representatives informed TUSAŞ that 200 of the 500 new machines the company will need over the next five years could be supplied from Kayseri. This partnership positions the city as a critical supply point in aerospace manufacturing infrastructure.
Ali Ekşi: “Kayseri is Becoming a Shining Star”
TOMTAŞ General Manager Ali Ekşi stated:
“Kayseri is becoming Turkey’s rising star in the aviation sector. Under TOMTAŞ’s leadership, this breakthrough will not only accelerate the development of domestic technologies but also strengthen our country’s position as a global player in aviation.”
A New Centre for the National Technology Initiative: Kayseri
The revival of TOMTAŞ marks not only a return to domestic production but also a major step toward strengthening Turkey’s independence and competitiveness in the defence industry. With this historic move, Kayseri is emerging as the new hub of Turkey’s National Technology Initiative.
