Aviation enthusiasts in Turkey gathered once again for Aviation Photographers’ Day, which was celebrated this year for the fifth time with a special event held at the Spotter Observation Deck of İGA Istanbul Airport. Participants captured takeoffs and landings through their lenses, expressing their passion for the skies once more.
Growing Interest in Aviation Photography Every Year
Known internationally as “spotting,” aviation photography is increasingly gaining popularity in Turkey. Celebrated annually on June 26, this special day brings together not only aircraft photography enthusiasts but also photographers aiming to create a visual archive for the aviation sector.
Event Led by TURNA
The event was organised at Istanbul Airport upon the proposal of TURNA, Turkey’s Aviation Visual Producers Network. Open to all aviation photographers, the event took place with wide participation and a friendly atmosphere.
A Historic Beginning: Inspired by a Department Head
Aviation Photographers’ Day was first declared five years ago as part of the 40th anniversary celebrations of the Police Aviation Department. Thanks to the commitment and support of then-Police Aviation Department Head Uygar Elmastaşı, the day gained official recognition and has been celebrated annually with growing participation ever since.
Beyond National Borders: Now a Global Event
Initially hosted by the Police Aviation Department, the event was later celebrated at prestigious venues such as İGA Istanbul Airport and the Istanbul Air Force Museum. Starting last year, it has also been celebrated on an international platform, marking its place on the calendar of aviation enthusiasts worldwide.
Lenses Turned to the Sky at the Spotting Terrace
This year, both professional and amateur photographers gathered at the specially designed spotting terrace of Istanbul Airport. Throughout the event, participants had the opportunity to capture aircraft landing and taking off from the best angles.
