Turkey Opens Tender for Spare Parts Supply for Eurofighter Typhoon

On January 24, NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) published a Request for Proposal (RFP) for spare parts for the Eurofighter Typhoon, designated as Turkey’s end user. This tender represents a significant step in Turkey’s efforts to modernise its air force, as it aligns with progress on the procurement of 40 Eurofighter Typhoon jets. The RFP includes a total of 250 spare parts in four different categories, aimed at fulfilling various needs for the Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft.

NSPA’s Role and the Procurement Process

NSPA, as a leading organisation for NATO’s multinational procurement, support, and sustainability efforts, plays a key role in international projects, including those involving Turkey. Reports suggest that Turkey is engaging in productive discussions with the consortium nations—UK, Germany, Italy, and Spain—over the Eurofighter Typhoon procurement. However, negotiations with Germany have reportedly progressed more slowly compared to the other countries. Recently, Turkey announced that it has reached a “Temporary Sales Authorization” agreement with Germany, aimed at expediting the process.

A Ministry of National Defence source commented: “Approval for the sale of the Eurofighter Typhoon to Turkey has been granted by the consortium member countries, including the UK, Spain, and Italy. Now, Germany has also approved the appointment of a Temporary Sales Agent for the aircraft. This will accelerate the procurement process.”

Germany’s Comments on Turkey’s Eurofighter Interest

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz confirmed Turkey’s interest in the Eurofighter Typhoon jets, stating that technical discussions are ongoing before any potential sale. Scholz mentioned, “Turkey is also interested in strengthening itself by purchasing German defence systems, such as our fighter jets. This is currently under review in Turkey, and we have made this possible.”

Turkey’s Interest in the Eurofighter and Its Goals

Turkey plans to purchase the latest Tranche 4 model of the Eurofighter Typhoon, which features the Captor-E AESA radar system and enhanced air-to-air and air-to-ground combat capabilities. One reason behind Turkey’s interest in the Eurofighter Typhoon is the aircraft’s advanced technology and multi-role capabilities. Turkey intends to use these jets as a temporary solution until the operational deployment of its own KAAN fighter jet, expected in 2030.

Defence Minister Yaşar Güler has stated, “We want to buy the Eurofighter. It is a highly effective aircraft.” This remark underscores Turkey’s strong interest in acquiring these jets, which will significantly enhance its air defence capabilities.

The Eurofighter Typhoon Programme and Global Deliveries

The Eurofighter Typhoon is a multi-nation project, co-produced by the UK, Germany, Italy, and Spain. More than 550 Eurofighter Typhoon jets have been delivered to seven countries worldwide. Turkey’s plans to include these aircraft in the modernisation of its air force and diversification of its fleet represents an important development in the global security market.
