Turkey Generates 37.6 Billion TL Revenue from 11 Airports

The Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, announced that by the end of 2024, Turkey would earn a total of 37,628,062,433 Turkish lira in revenue from airports operated under Public-Private Partnership (PPP) projects.

In his statement, Uraloğlu said, “With the revenue expected by the end of 2024, the total earnings from PPP airports will reach 344,648,402,000 lira.” He emphasised the critical role of Turkey’s airports in trade and logistics.

Turkey’s Airport Map and PPP Projects

Minister Uraloğlu stated that Turkey currently has a total of 58 active airports, 11 of which are operated under PPP projects. He highlighted that these projects contribute significantly to Turkey’s economic growth, beyond merely enhancing transportation infrastructure. Uraloğlu remarked, “Rental incomes from airports play a crucial role in accelerating our country’s growing economy.”

The Significance of Istanbul Airport

Uraloğlu underscored that Istanbul Airport remains the largest revenue-generating airport among these projects. He revealed that by the end of 2024, Istanbul Airport is expected to generate €736,179,973 in rent and an additional €44,637,879 in revenue exceeding guaranteed amounts. The minister also highlighted Istanbul Airport’s position as a major transportation hub not only for Turkey but on a global scale.

Esenboğa and Çukurova Airports

Speaking about Esenboğa Airport in Ankara, Uraloğlu noted that it ranks among the top PPP projects. He announced that Esenboğa is expected to generate €9,248,206 in surplus income by the end of 2024. Regarding Çukurova Airport, scheduled to open on 10 August 2024, Uraloğlu stressed its potential for regional development. He said, “This airport will boost the growth of agriculture and industry sectors and enhance the logistics networks of local businesses.”

Airports in Tourism Hubs

Airports in Turkey’s major tourist destinations have been attracting attention due to their increasing passenger numbers throughout the year. Antalya Airport is expected to generate €100,500,000 in rent by the end of 2024, while Gazipaşa-Alanya Airport is projected to bring in $100,000. Other significant airports, such as Izmir Adnan Menderes, Milas/Bodrum, and Dalaman, are also set to contribute substantial rental income.

Total Revenue from PPP Airports

By the end of 2024, the state is expected to earn a total of 37,628,062,433 lira from the 11 airports operated under PPP projects. Minister Uraloğlu stated that this corresponds to a foreign exchange equivalent of €1,024,090,707. Furthermore, total revenue from these projects was recorded at 307,020,339,567 lira as of the end of 2023. Uraloğlu concluded, “By the end of 2024, PPP airport projects are set to contribute €9.38 billion, equivalent to 344,648,402,000 lira, to the state treasury.”
