$4 Million Project to Bring Black Box Analysis to Ankara

Turkey is taking another significant step in civil aviation. The black box analysis process, which plays a critical role in clarifying aircraft accidents, will now be carried out with national capabilities.

Within the scope of a $4 million project developed in cooperation between the Transportation Safety Investigation Board and HAVELSAN, the analysis of aircraft black boxes will be performed in Turkey. The project is planned to be implemented in early 2026.

Until now, the black boxes from aircraft accidents in Turkey were sent to countries such as Germany and France for analysis. With the new system, all decoding procedures will be conducted in laboratories to be established in Ankara.

Turkey Ends Foreign Dependence in Black Box Analysis

According to civil aviation regulations, countries investigate accidents that occur within their borders and report them to relevant higher authorities. For this reason, black box analyses in accidents in Turkey were previously carried out by securing appointments from foreign countries. Thanks to the new system, both time will be saved and the transfer of critical information to foreign countries will be prevented.

In addition, the project will not only cover domestic accidents but will also allow international accidents to be analysed in Ankara upon request. Thus, Turkey will become a regional hub for black box analysis.
