Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s planned visit to Azerbaijan, scheduled days in advance, was canceled due to Turkey’s refusal to grant airspace access.
In a statement from the Israeli Presidency, it was noted that Herzog intended to participate in the United Nations COP29 Climate Conference in Baku, but the visit was canceled “for security reasons.” However, sources from the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that the real reason behind the cancellation was Turkey.
A senior official from Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs refuted the security claims, stating, “Turkey did not allow the Wing of Zion aircraft carrying the Israeli President to pass through its airspace. As a result, the visit could not take place.”
This decision by Turkey is seen as a potential source of new tension in Israeli-Turkish relations. Past crises between the two nations have also had significant impacts on regional politics.
Israel and Azerbaijan maintain strong diplomatic ties. Whether Herzog’s canceled visit will be rescheduled remains uncertain.
