According to data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), Turkey’s tourism sector achieved an all-time record in 2024. Tourism revenues increased by 8.3% compared to the previous year, surpassing $61 billion. The number of visitors also saw a significant rise. Historic Peak in Tourism Revenues
Total tourism revenue in 2024 reached $61.103 billion, marking an 8.3% increase from the previous year. Income from visitors amounted to $60.497 billion, while revenue from transit passengers totalled $606 million. Additionally, 17% of tourism revenue came from Turkish citizens residing abroad.
Personal Expenditures and Package Tours Stood Out
The majority of visitor spending was on personal expenses:
- Personal expenditures: $43.092 billion
- Package tour expenditures: $17.404 billion
Fourth Quarter Data
In the last quarter of 2024 (October-December), tourism revenue increased by 14.5% compared to the same period the previous year, reaching $13.788 billion. During this period:
- Revenue from visitors: $13.650 billion
- Revenue from transit passengers: $137 million
- 19.5% of visitor spending came from Turkish citizens residing abroad.
Increase in Visitor Numbers
The number of visitors to Turkey in 2024 rose by 9% compared to the previous year, reaching 62.232 million people. Among these visitors:
- 15.4% (9.599 million people) were Turkish citizens living abroad.
The average expenditure per overnight visitor was $97, while Turkish citizens residing abroad spent an average of $63 per night.
Most Visitors Came for Travel and Leisure
Examining the reasons for visits:
- 64.9% came for travel, leisure, sports, and cultural activities.
- 69.6% of Turkish citizens living abroad visited for family and friend reunions.
Tourism Expenditure Declined
In 2024, the total amount spent by Turkish citizens residing in Turkey on overseas trips decreased by 8.2% to $7.741 billion. Of this amount:
- $6.312 billion was personal expenditure,
- $1.428 billion was spent on package tours.
Average Overseas Spending Increased
The average expenditure per Turkish citizen travelling abroad in 2024 was recorded at $680. However, in the last quarter of 2024, the number of Turkish citizens travelling abroad decreased by 14.3% compared to the same period in the previous year, falling to 2.691 million people.
