Turkey Becomes a Pioneer in UAV Technology Operating Without GPS

Turkey has taken a critical step in the defense industry by developing a drone infrastructure that does not require GPS to operate. STM General Manager Özgür Güleryüz announced that the artificial intelligence-based navigation system has been integrated into the TOGAN tactical unmanned aerial vehicle.

TOGAN: Changing the Game in GPS-Denied Environments

STM has been tasked with developing GPS-independent UAV technology under the KERKES Project, led by the Defense Industry Agency (SSB).

Regarding the system, Güleryüz stated:

“We have developed an infrastructure that processes visual data using artificial intelligence to navigate without GPS. This system has been integrated into TOGAN. It could be the world’s only tactical drone capable of flying in GPS-denied environments.”

KARGU: Turkey’s Loitering Munition UAV Breaks Export Records

Güleryüz also highlighted the global success of Turkey’s loitering munition UAV, KARGU. He stated that over 3,000 units have been produced and exported to 10 countries so far. Additionally, tests for armor-piercing warheads have been successfully completed, and swarm attack capabilities are being developed for use in electronic warfare scenarios.

Cybersecurity for KAAN: Securing Turkey’s Next-Generation Fighter Jet

STM continues to work with TAI and Havelsan to strengthen the cybersecurity infrastructure of Turkey’s national fighter jet, KAAN.

Emphasizing KAAN’s advanced sensors and communication systems, Güleryüz stated:
“We prioritized cybersecurity measures from the earliest stages of design. This approach also applies to naval platforms.”

STM is also advancing the second phase of its project to establish a cyber defense center for the Turkish Armed Forces.

Historic Warship Agreement with Portugal

STM recently reached a milestone in Turkey’s defense industry exports by signing a warship production agreement with Portugal.

Güleryüz noted that after two years of negotiations, Portugal initially planned to order one ship but later increased the order to two. He emphasized that the certification of Turkish ships by the Turkish Navy and their compliance with NATO standards played a crucial role in building confidence.

Highlighting the significance of the agreement, Güleryüz stated:
“We are building ships for the country of Vasco da Gama and the descendants of Magellan. This is a historic achievement for Turkey’s defense industry.”
