Turkey and UAE Join Forces in the Fifth Generation Fighter KAAN Project!

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is conducting significant negotiations with Turkey on the development of fifth-generation fighter jets, as part of its goal to expand regional partnerships in the defence sector. In this context, critical projects such as the “KAAN” fighter jet, the HÜRKUŞ training aircraft, and the ATAK attack helicopter, developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ), have come under the UAE’s spotlight.

Steps Towards Partnership in the “KAAN” Project

TUSAŞ General Manager Mehmet Demiroğlu stated at the “IDEX 2025” defence exhibition in Abu Dhabi that the UAE has shown strong interest in the KAAN fighter jet and is ready to join the project.

Key Details of the Project:

  • The UAE’s participation in the KAAN project could enhance the influence of the Turkish defence industry in the Gulf region.
  • The second prototype is planned to be ready by the end of 2025, with the third model expected at the beginning of 2026.
  • Mass production of KAAN is scheduled to begin in 2028.
  • While Saudi Arabia is already involved in the project, the UAE’s inclusion could be a critical step for the Turkish defence sector.

Ongoing Talks on HÜRKUŞ and ATAK

Progress has also been made between the UAE and TUSAŞ regarding the development of the HÜRKUŞ training aircraft. Both sides have agreed to collaborate on enhancing the aircraft’s training capabilities.

Negotiations on the ATAK attack helicopter have gained momentum once again. The UAE, which previously tested the ATAK-1 model with positive results, had paused discussions for a while. However, talks have resumed, and it is now suggested that the UAE may join the project.

Strong Demand for ANKA-3 UAV

The UAE, aiming to expand its cooperation in the defence sector, has also shown significant interest in the ANKA-3 combat UAV. Emirati officials are in discussions with Turkish companies to develop a new aviation system using these UAVs.

Strengthening Turkey-UAE Partnership

The defence cooperation between the UAE and Turkey stands out as part of a broader strategic approach to ensure regional security and stability. Gulf countries are deepening their collaboration with Turkey to access advanced military technologies and strengthen international partnerships.

TUSAŞ General Manager Demiroğlu stated at the IDEX 2025 exhibition in Abu Dhabi, “We plan to deepen our strategic cooperation with the UAE to build a strong economy and enhance our defence capacity.”

Shared Goals in Defence and Economy

With the advancement of the defence industry, the partnership between Turkey and the UAE is expected to gain new dimensions not only in military but also in economic fields. Trade volume between the two countries has grown rapidly in recent years, and new projects aim to deepen these relations even further.

Closely following F-35 and other defence projects, the UAE is also showing significant interest in Turkey’s fifth-generation fighter jet and UAV developments. In this regard, negotiations continue for the integration of Turkish-made air and land platforms into the UAE’s inventory.
