During a military exercise in the town of Pocheon, South Korea, a fighter jet mistakenly bombed a civilian area, injuring seven people. The incident occurred approximately 40 kilometres north of the capital, Seoul.
Statement from the South Korean Air Force
According to a statement from the South Korean Air Force, an KF-16 fighter jet dropped eight MK-82 bombs at around 10:00 am local time on Thursday. However, the bombs fell outside the designated live-fire training zone, located near the North Korean border.
Civilian Casualties and Damage
Authorities reported that seven civilians were injured, and their home sustained significant damage. Initial assessments indicated that four people were seriously injured, while three sustained minor injuries. Local officials transported the injured to nearby hospitals, and the area’s civilian infrastructure suffered severe damage.
Details of the Exercise
The exercise was part of a joint training operation between South Korea and the United States, involving live ammunition and over 160 pieces of military equipment, including tanks, self-propelled howitzers, helicopters, and fighter jets.
