At the opening ceremony of the Atatürk Airport Nation’s Garden, President Erdoğan said they are preparing Istanbul for the Century of Türkiye. During his speech at the opening ceremony of the Atatürk Airport Nation’s Garden, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated, “Despite all acts of sabotage, we are preparing our Istanbul for the Century of Türkiye. We do not care who our cities vote for.” Türkiye’s largest city park and disaster assembly area, the Atatürk Airport Nation’s Garden, has been opened to service with its 1,215,000 square metres of green space.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan attended the opening ceremony of the Atatürk Airport Nation’s Garden. In his speech, Erdoğan said, “Despite all acts of sabotage, we are preparing our Istanbul for the Century of Türkiye in a much stronger way. We do not care who our cities vote for. We will not leave our Istanbul to the mercy of the incompetent and the incapable.”

Erdoğan emphasised that the newly inaugurated nation’s garden in Istanbul is not only a green space but will also serve as a shelter and assembly area in case of disasters.

Türkiye’s Largest City Park

With a total of 1,215,000 square metres of green area, the Atatürk Airport Nation’s Garden has been inaugurated as Türkiye’s largest city park and disaster assembly area. The park can accommodate more than 165,000 people at the same time and has the capacity to set up 40,000 tents in the event of a disaster.

Equipped with walking and cycling paths, sports fields, exhibition areas, a nation’s library, children’s playgrounds, soup kitchens, and social facilities, the nation’s garden is set to become Istanbul’s new centre of life.

“What Matters Is People”

Highlighting the spirit of cities and human-centred planning in his speech, President Erdoğan said, “What makes a city a city is not its buildings, but its people. If a person only consumes and pollutes the city they live in, it means that person is betraying their city.”

Erdoğan also added, “We do not care who our cities vote for. We provide equal service to each and every one of our 86 million citizens.”

Green Transformation Initiative

Erdoğan announced that, across Türkiye, 313 nation’s gardens have been completed on a total area of 36,560,000 square metres, while construction continues for 231 more gardens covering 45,247,000 square metres.

He also stated that 34 nation’s gardens have been completed in Istanbul, while 22 are still under construction.

Disaster Preparedness and Social Facilities

The nation’s garden includes 9 marketplaces, a car park with a 4,000-vehicle capacity, 18 greenhouses, 12 tennis courts, 11 basketball courts, 6 volleyball courts, 6 football pitches, 2 skateboarding tracks, and 10,679 square metres of cycling paths. Additionally, a 2.5-kilometre-long artificial stream named “Ab-ı Hayat Stream” contributes to the park’s natural landscape.

Large Attendance at the Ceremony

The opening ceremony was attended by the Minister of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change Murat Kurum, along with many citizens. Following the inauguration, two days of events, children’s workshops, zero waste practices, and various shows will be held in the area.
