Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that a 25-person technical team has been sent from Turkey for the reconstruction of Damascus Airport, which was damaged during the 13-year civil war in Syria. A shipment consisting of 113 vehicles, devices, and systems was sent via 6 trucks, and installation work has begun. While security measures at the airport are being increased, X-ray machines, metal detectors, and two domestically produced fire trucks have also been delivered to the region.
Technical Team Continues Its Work on Site
Minister Uraloğlu stated that the technical team, formed by the State Airports Authority (DHMİ), safely entered Syria through the Cilvegözü Border Gate on February 7, 2025. As part of the efforts, navigation and electronic systems are being installed at Damascus Airport to ensure flight safety.
“After our technical team completes the installation of the equipment, they will also manage the training process of the airport staff,” said Uraloğlu, emphasizing that the gaps in the airspace have been documented and that meticulous efforts are being made to prepare the airport for international flights.
Navigation Systems and Air Traffic Control Are Being Rebuilt
The Air Navigation Electronics unit is reviewing and performing maintenance and repairs on the systems that have been out of use for a long time. Two new transceiver radio systems have been installed and handed over to the tower personnel, and the repair of the air traffic control devices, which were damaged in the war, is also underway.
“Our teams are continuing their work at the Damascus Road Control and Damascus Tower. Flights are currently being carried out under visual flight conditions. Our goal is to enhance the safety of landing and takeoff operations at Damascus Airport with air navigation aids,” Uraloğlu stated.
Security Measures Are Being Enhanced
To increase security at Damascus Airport, 10 X-ray machines, 4 explosives detectors, 10 door-type metal detectors, and 8 handheld detectors have been delivered from Turkey. Teams, in cooperation with Syrian officials, have completed the installation of these devices and continue to evaluate and improve the security level of the airport.
Uraloğlu said, “So far, the installation of 6 X-ray machines and 5 door-type metal detectors has been completed. Our work continues for the installation of the remaining equipment and the repair of the existing security systems.”
Domestic ARFF Vehicles Sent for Fire Safety
To improve fire safety at the airport, Turkey has sent two domestically produced Volkan Lion 8×8 combined ARFF vehicles along with various fire-fighting equipment. These new ARFF vehicles will strengthen the airport’s capacity to handle emergencies and contribute to raising the fire safety standards.
Uraloğlu stated, “Fire safety training has been provided to Syrian personnel, and our efforts continue to align the operations of the ARFF unit with international standards.”
Turkey Will Continue to Strengthen Syria’s Aviation Infrastructure
Turkey continues its technical cooperation to ensure that Damascus Airport can serve international flights more safely and efficiently.
Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu said, “Our technical teams are working diligently in every area, from air navigation systems to security measures, to increase the operational efficiency of the airport. As Turkey, we will continue our cooperation to strengthen Syria’s aviation infrastructure, our friendly and brotherly country.”
