Sweden and Brazil are taking their long-standing defense and aerospace collaboration to new heights. A recently signed letter of intent outlines plans to expand Brazil’s fleet of Swedish-made Jas 39 Gripen fighter jets and for Sweden to acquire Brazilian-built Embraer C-390 transport aircraft.
Expansion of the Gripen Fleet
Launched in 2014, the partnership centered around the production of Gripen jets has significantly benefited Brazil’s defense industry. Of the 36 Gripen jets ordered under the initial agreement, eight have already been delivered. With the new letter of intent, the fleet is set to grow by 25%. The joint production between Sweden’s Saab and Brazil’s Embraer continues to enhance Brazil’s technological infrastructure, fostering local expertise and capacity.
Sweden’s Acquisition of C-390 Aircraft
The agreement also includes Sweden’s intention to integrate Embraer C-390 transport aircraft into its fleet. Renowned for its versatility and high payload capacity, the C-390 is a standout military transport aircraft. Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) and Armed Forces have been authorized to begin formal negotiations for the purchase.
Regional Leadership in Aerospace
The collaborative production of Gripen jets not only bolsters Brazil’s military capabilities but also supports its ambition to achieve regional leadership in aerospace technology. This step strengthens Brazil’s position in the international defense market, paving the way for greater influence and competitiveness.
Showcasing Strength at Cruzex 2024
The agreement was signed during the Cruzex 2024 exercise held in Natal, Brazil. During the event, Brazil showcased its Gripen jets, highlighting the achievements of its collaboration with Sweden on an international stage.
A Deepening Strategic Partnership
Sweden’s Minister of Defence, Pål Jonson, emphasized the strategic significance of the two countries’ defense partnership, stating, “The new letter of intent provides a robust foundation for further strengthening our cooperation in aviation and defense.”
