Suspicion of Russian Drones: Romania Scrambles Fighter Jets

The Romanian Ministry of Defense scrambled fighter jets for the second time this week after an unidentified object approached the country’s airspace over the Black Sea. The ministry stated that the objects are most likely drones. Romania has previously reported finding fragments of Russian drones near its border with Ukraine on multiple occasions.

Suspicious Activity Over the Black Sea

Romanian defense officials detected an unidentified object moving toward Romania, a European Union and NATO member, from the Black Sea at around 2:30 AM. The incident draws attention as Romania shares a border with Ukraine, and Russia has escalated its attacks on Ukrainian targets near the Black Sea and the Danube River.

Romania’s Concerns Over Russian Drones

Romania has repeatedly raised concerns about Russian drones used in Moscow’s attacks on Ukraine, violating its airspace. This week’s event reignited fears of Russian drones encroaching on Romanian territory.

Spanish and Romanian Jets Scramble

In response to the detected object, two Spanish Air Force F-18s and two Romanian Air Force F-16s were deployed to the region. However, officials reported that the unidentified object disappeared from radar shortly after and could not be located. A similar incident occurred on Thursday, with the same jets scrambled in response to another suspected airspace violation.
