United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), one of the flagship companies of Russia’s defense industry, has completed the delivery of a new batch of SU-35S multirole fighter jets to the Russian Air Force. This delivery, carried out by UAC under the state-owned defense conglomerate Rostec, once again highlights the sustainability of the country’s aerospace production capacity despite ongoing Western sanctions.
4++ Generation with Super Maneuverability and Long-Range Strike Capabilities
Classified by NATO as the Flanker-E+, the SU-35S is an advanced evolution of the classic Su-27 platform. Equipped with 4++ generation technologies, this fighter jet stands out with its advanced radar systems, super maneuverability, and engines capable of reaching supersonic speeds without using afterburners.
The aircraft is optimized for both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, featuring a passive electronically scanned array (PESA) radar capable of tracking and engaging multiple targets simultaneously, plasma-ignited thrust vectoring engines, and a redesigned aerodynamic airframe. Its ability to maintain supersonic flight without afterburners gives the SU-35S a significant edge in modern aerial combat scenarios.
A Distinct Alternative to the Eurofighter and F-15EX
What sets the SU-35S apart from its Western counterparts—such as the Eurofighter Typhoon and the F-15EX—is its emphasis on high maneuverability, extended radar range, and design tailored for kinetic engagements. Unlike its competitors that prioritise low radar cross-section (stealth), the SU-35S favours raw performance and agility. It also surpasses similar Chinese platforms like the J-11D and J-16 in terms of avionics and propulsion efficiency.
Proven Combat Performance in Syria and Ukraine
Having proven itself in real combat, the SU-35S played an active role in air operations in Syria and more recently in the conflict in Ukraine. It has been deployed for escort missions during long-range cruise missile strikes, airspace control, and precision long-range attack missions. However, its survivability against advanced air defence systems has occasionally been questioned.
Production Continues Despite Sanctions
Despite export restrictions imposed on Western-made avionics and engine components, production of the SU-35S continues uninterrupted at UAC’s Komsomolsk-on-Amur facility. Rostec aims to increase production efficiency by 30% by 2030. These jets also symbolize the resilience and technological self-reliance of the Russian defence industry.
Strategic and Economic Significance
In addition to being a high-value export product—previously sold to countries like China and Egypt—the SU-35S also plays a key role in sustaining domestic employment and industrial capacity through Russian military procurement. With an estimated unit cost of $40–45 million, these aircraft are funded under Russia’s State Armaments Program.
