386.8 Million Ruble Damage
The incident, which took place at an airport in the Simferopol region of Crimea, resulted in an estimated 386.8 million rubles (approximately 4 million dollars) in damages to the Russian Ministry of Defense.
Despite not having a driver’s license, the soldier attempted to drive the truck and collided with the Su-25 fighter jet, causing significant damage to the aircraft.
Prison Sentence and Probation
Following an investigation into the incident, the soldier was sentenced to a one-year delayed prison sentence and 18 months of probation. Sources in Russia emphasized that the soldier’s act of driving without a license was a major negligence.
Russian Fleet Suffering Significant Losses
This accident is another in a series of heavy losses for Russia during the ongoing war in Ukraine. Experts highlight that the Russian Air Force has suffered serious losses due to effective attacks by Ukrainian forces and friendly fire incidents.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, it is estimated that Russia has lost about 10% of its aircraft fleet. Ukraine has targeted Russian military facilities, airports, ammunition depots, and oil refineries in an effort to disrupt Moscow’s operations.
