Strike Crisis at German Airports: 640 Flights Cancelled

The strike by security personnel at German airports has severely disrupted air traffic, resulting in the cancellation of more than 640 flights and leaving thousands of passengers stranded.

Wage Demands Spark the Crisis

Security staff at Düsseldorf, Cologne, and Stuttgart airports walked out in protest, demanding better wages. The Verdi union, representing approximately 23,000 security workers, is calling for an increase in the current gross hourly wage from €17 to €20. Union representatives have signalled that the strike action will continue until their demands are met.

Flights Brought to a Standstill

Disruptions occurred at Düsseldorf, Cologne, and Stuttgart airports, which collectively serve an average of 115,000 passengers daily. Meanwhile, short-term strikes also took place at Berlin’s Schoenefeld and Tegel airports. A four-hour strike on Monday alone led to the cancellation of 50 flights, causing significant delays to air travel.

Negotiations Ongoing

The Verdi union has announced that wage negotiations will resume on 23 January. However, if BDLS the association representing airport security companies fails to meet the workers’ demands, the strike action is expected to escalate.

Officials are warning passengers that flight cancellations may increase if no agreement is reached between the parties.
