Air Europa, the Spanish airline with the country’s largest wide-body aircraft fleet, has successfully completed its inaugural scheduled flight on the Madrid–Istanbul route. A vibrant welcoming ceremony was held at Istanbul Airport to mark the occasion.
The event took place at Gate B15 in the arrivals area of Istanbul Airport and was attended by Cristina Latorre Sancho, the Spanish Ambassador to Ankara; İGA CEO Selahattin Bilgen; Air Europa CEO Jesus Nuno de la Rosa; along with numerous guests.
Spanish Ambassador Cristina Latorre Sancho emphasised that the newly launched Madrid–Istanbul flights would contribute to the multifaceted relationship between the two countries. She stated:
“These flights link Spain and Türkiye not only geographically, but also through strong economic and cultural ties. Whether for leisure, education, or business, travel builds bridges between people and nations. This new route by Air Europa will significantly enhance tourism and cooperation between our countries.”
İGA CEO Selahattin Bilgen highlighted that Istanbul Airport has become a strategic hub for airlines with large-capacity aircraft, and added:
“This new service launched with Air Europa not only establishes a transport link between Madrid and Istanbul, but also supports tourism, trade, and cultural cooperation. Thanks to Istanbul’s unique connectivity between Asia, Africa, and Europe, such partnerships will further strengthen Türkiye’s position in global aviation.”
Providing details on the new route, Bilgen noted that flights will initially operate four times a week in both directions, with daily services set to begin in July.
The event concluded with a traditional cake-cutting and ribbon ceremony. Various refreshments were offered to passengers and guests as a memento of the day.
