Spain Purchases 45 HÜRJETs: €3.12 Billion Contract Approved

Spain has approved the purchase of HÜRJET, developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ). The €3.12 billion contract for 45 HÜRJETs marks Turkey’s largest step into Europe’s defense industry.

Turkey’s national jet trainer and light attack aircraft, HÜRJET, is taking to European skies. The Spanish government has approved the purchase of HÜRJET, developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ).

The Spanish Council of Ministers marked a historic milestone for the Turkish defense and aerospace industry with its decision on October 28. Under this decision, the Spanish Air and Space Forces approved a €3.12 billion Integrated Training System (ITS-C) contract for 45 HÜRJETs, which will replace the aging F-5 (AE.09) fleet.

This agreement is seen as the most concrete development validating Turkey’s global reliability in aviation technology and engineering capacity.

Strategic Transformation: A 30-Year New Generation Pilot Training Begins

The Spanish Ministry of Defense emphasized that the program will fundamentally renew the country’s pilot training capabilities and create a 30-year transformation in the training system.

The ITS-C system aims to maximize tactical and technological preparedness required by modern combat environments. The contract will remain valid until November 30, 2035, with no extension options.

The first HÜRJETs are planned to be delivered in 2028, with active use beginning in the 2029/2030 training period. The aircraft are expected to serve in Spanish skies for at least 30 years.

European Cooperation Led by Airbus

The project is not just an aircraft procurement agreement but also stands out as a model of international industrial cooperation. According to defense news site Infodefensa, Airbus will act as the national coordinator for the program.

Under Airbus leadership, 15 major Spanish aerospace companies—including Aciturri, Aernnova, Aertec, Airtificial, Amper, Centum, CESA, CLUE, GMV, Grabysur, Indra, Grupo Oesia, Orbital, and Sener—will actively participate in the project.

This multinational integration will ensure that the HÜRJET platform is developed in deep technical alignment with Spain’s local defense industry.

€1.04 Billion Financial Support

The Spanish Ministry of Industry announced that it will provide €1.04 billion in credit support spread over the program’s first five years. This financial contribution highlights Spain’s strategic commitment to the project and signals that HÜRJET will initiate a profound transformation in Europe’s next-generation jet pilot training.
