Spain Evaluates KAAN for the Post-2030 Period

Spain has cancelled its F-35 purchase from the U.S. According to media reports, Turkey’s National Combat Aircraft KAAN has appeared on Madrid’s radar.

The Spanish media has reported that following Madrid’s decision to cancel the purchase of F-35 fighter jets from the United States, Spain has begun evaluating Turkey’s fifth-generation fighter jet, the National Combat Aircraft (MMU) KAAN, for the post-2030 period.

According to reports by El Universo and El Economista, this move by Spain has drawn the ire of U.S. President Donald Trump. However, the Madrid administration is currently seeking a complementary model to its existing Eurofighter fleet, and KAAN stands out as an attractive option in this context.

Developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ), KAAN features a sleek and angular design aimed at minimising radar detection. The aircraft, which possesses fifth-generation capabilities, is described as an “air superiority fighter set to replace the F-16.” The first 20 KAAN aircraft are planned to be delivered to the Turkish Air Force in 2028.

Spanish media outlets note that KAAN’s Mach 1.8 speed capacity, maximum take-off weight of 27,860 kg, and modern weapon integration make it an appealing alternative for European countries as well.

Analyses suggest that if KAAN were to be procured, it would temporarily but strategically enhance the Spanish Air Force’s Eurofighter fleet, allowing Spain to gain valuable time until the sixth-generation FCAS fighter jets become operational.
