South Korea to Suspend Air Traffic for University Entrance Exam

South Korea will suspend all aircraft take-offs and landings for 35 minutes on Thursday to ensure silence during the English listening section of the College Scholastic Ability Test. Around 140 flights have been rescheduled.

All aircraft take-offs and landings will be suspended for 35 minutes to ensure silence during the English listening section.

South Korea has decided to temporarily halt all aircraft take-offs and landings during the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) to be held nationwide on Thursday, to prevent distractions for students during the English listening section of the exam.

According to a statement from the South Korean Ministry of Transport, in order to prevent noise pollution during one of the most critical stages of the exam, no aircraft will take off or land between 13:05 and 13:40 local time on Thursday.

Around 140 Flights Rescheduled

Officials announced that approximately 140 flights have been rescheduled under this decision, and aircraft already in flight will cruise at an altitude of 3 kilometres or higher under air traffic control management.

The Ministry reminded that this measure is a traditional precaution implemented every year to allow students to concentrate on the exam at the highest level.

CSAT: The Most Critical Threshold in University Life

The CSAT (College Scholastic Ability Test) is the most important national exam in South Korea for university admissions.

On the exam day, the entire country effectively declares a “day of silence”: many workplaces open late, stock markets start trading later, and public institutions implement special transportation plans to help students reach their exam centres.

In this context, the suspension of flights is considered one of the measures taken to ensure that students experience no distractions during the listening test.
