Tajikistan’s largest airline, Somon Air, has announced an agreement with UAE-based aircraft leasing and management firm DAE Capital to acquire two Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. The new aircraft are expected to join the airline’s fleet in 2026. The agreement was signed at Somon Air’s Dushanbe offices by the airline’s CEO, Abdulkosim Valiev, and DAE Capital Chairman, David Houlihan.
Somon Air has been operating international flights since 2008 and is a full member of IATA. The airline directly competes with Tajikistan’s national carrier, Tajik Air. Its current fleet consists of four Boeing 737-800s and two Boeing 737-900ERs, all named after Tajikistan’s national heroes or historical figures.
CEO’s Statement on the Purchase
Somon Air CEO Abdulkosim Valiev commented on the acquisition:
“The signing of this agreement is part of our long-term strategy to modernize our fleet and enhance our service quality. Thanks to the support of our esteemed President, Emomali Rahmon, Tajikistan’s civil aviation sector continues to grow every year.”
Boeing 737 MAX 8: Enhanced Efficiency and Comfort
Highlighting the Boeing 737 MAX 8’s advanced fuel efficiency, extended range, and improved operational features, Valiev added:
“These aircraft will allow us to further enhance passenger comfort and safety. They will also support our network expansion, improve operational efficiency, and increase flight frequency.”
The new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft are seen as a strategic move to replace Somon Air’s older Boeing 737-800 models. While the airline had previously shown interest in Airbus and Embraer aircraft, this agreement with DAE Capital reaffirms its commitment to Boeing jets.
Somon Air Prepares for London Flights
The addition of these new aircraft supports Somon Air’s plans to launch weekly flights from Tbilisi, Georgia, to London. Tajikistan Civil Aviation Agency official Habibullo Nazarzoda confirmed that the necessary approvals for the London route have been secured.
Flights will commence once suitable landing and departure slots at a London airport are allocated. This expansion will significantly enhance Somon Air’s network, which currently serves 27 routes in 13 countries, reaching 25 destinations.
