In a major operation at Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo, Sri Lanka, 21-year-old British flight attendant Charlotte L. was arrested after 46 kilograms of synthetic drugs were found in her suitcase. The flight attendant, who denies all charges, claimed, “The drugs don’t belong to me — I was set up.”
€1.4 Million Drug Bust
Charlotte L., who arrived on a flight from Bangkok, Thailand, was detained on suspicion of drug trafficking after officials discovered synthetic cannabis worth approximately €1.4 million in her luggage. Sri Lankan police have transferred her to Negombo Prison pending legal proceedings.
Claims: Could She Have Been Trapped via Social Media?
According to international media reports, Charlotte L.’s case may not be isolated. Just a few weeks ago, another British national, Bella C., was arrested in Georgia under similar circumstances with a large quantity of drugs. A striking commonality between the two cases is that both women had recently been in Bangkok prior to their arrests.
Gangs Targeting Young Women
Security agencies believe that international drug trafficking networks are targeting young women through social media and dating apps. Lured with promises of “luxury travel” or “quick money,” victims may unknowingly be used as drug mules.
Concerning Detention Conditions
Charlotte L. is being held in Negombo Prison, a facility that has drawn criticism from human rights advocates. The prison is currently housing four times its intended female inmate capacity, with serious issues related to overcrowding, poor hygiene, and heightened security risks.
UK Government Involved
The UK Foreign Office has confirmed that Charlotte L. is receiving consular assistance and that her legal situation is being closely monitored. Meanwhile, Sri Lankan authorities are conducting a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
