Second Runway at Sabiha Gökçen Boosts Passenger Traffic by 12%

Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, evaluated the contribution of the second runway at Sabiha Gökçen Airport, which became operational at the end of 2023, to the airport’s passenger and cargo traffic capacity. According to Minister Uraloğlu, the new runway resulted in a 12% increase in both passenger and cargo traffic.

Capacity on the Rise

Minister Uraloğlu stated that with the second runway in service, Sabiha Gökçen is now more efficiently accommodating growing passenger and aircraft traffic. Highlighting significant improvements in air traffic capacity, he shared the following data:

  • Passenger Traffic: A total of 41,270,010 passengers were served in 2024, marking a 12% increase compared to the previous year.
  • Aircraft Movements: A total of 241,536 flights were recorded, representing a 6% increase.
  • Cargo Traffic: 420,924 tons of cargo were transported, achieving a 12% increase overall, including:
    • Domestic Routes: 128,543 tons (+6% increase)
    • International Routes: 292,381 tons (+15% increase)

Modernization and New Investments

The newly constructed second runway, spanning 3,540 meters, is designed to accommodate wide-body aircraft for takeoffs and landings. This development aims to further enhance Istanbul’s role as a major hub in international aviation.

Additional modernization efforts include:

  • New taxiways and high-capacity aprons,
  • A modern air traffic control tower,
  • State-of-the-art infrastructure facilities to improve service quality.

Minister Uraloğlu emphasized that these substantial investments have transformed Sabiha Gökçen into a more efficient and reliable airport, contributing positively to both the city and the regional economy.
