A highly dangerous sabotage attempt targeting the Le Bourget Air Show in Paris has been prevented. French police arrested seven far-left activists who were allegedly planning to disrupt the event by temporarily blocking the airspace.
Paris police detained the suspects, who had plotted to create aerial chaos using hundreds of helium balloons during the prestigious air show at Le Bourget. Their aim was to disrupt the event and interfere with airspace operations.
Plan to Block Airspace with 200 Helium Balloons
Authorities seized around 200 helium balloons and specialised helium tanks during the investigation. The sabotage plan was designed in two phases. The first attempt was scheduled for Friday, the opening day for the general public. However, it was postponed due to French President Emmanuel Macron’s absence—he was attending the G7 Summit in Canada.
The second phase was set to take place on Saturday afternoon, with the activists aiming to temporarily block the airspace using helium balloons. Thanks to the swift action of French interior authorities, the operation was thwarted before it could be carried out.
Macron’s Attendance and Heightened Security
The Le Bourget Air Show is one of the most significant aviation events in the world. Due to President Macron’s expected presence, enhanced security measures were already in place. The sabotage attempt is believed to have been part of a protest targeting Israeli defence companies participating in the event.
Charges Under French Law
The detained suspects now face charges under French law for “posing a threat to the movement of airspace and flying vehicles.” Police and security forces emphasised that they have stepped up efforts to prevent such actions.
Public Concern Grows
This incident has underscored the critical role of France’s security infrastructure and has sparked serious public concern regarding the motivations and backers behind such sabotage attempts.
