Runway Control in Istanbul: Aircraft Held in the Air

At Sabiha Gökçen Airport, two aircraft performed go-arounds and others were held in the air due to birds spotted on the runway. Flights returned to normal after inspections.

An extraordinary situation at Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport around midday caused brief disruptions in air traffic. The pilot of an Airbus A320 belonging to AJet, operating the Diyarbakır–Istanbul flight, spotted a large number of birds on the runway during landing.

After the aircraft landed safely, the pilot reported the situation to the Air Traffic Control Tower to prevent a possible bird strike. A detailed inspection of the runway was then initiated.

Two Aircraft Performed Go-Arounds, Others Held in the Air

While inspections were ongoing, two approaching aircraft were forced to perform go-arounds. Other aircraft were instructed to circle in the air for a while due to safety concerns.

Flights Returned to Normal

Following inspections on the runway and the absence of any hazards, air traffic returned to normal. Flight operations continued as scheduled after the short disruption.

Such situations are managed under the strictest procedures in aviation, as they can pose a threat to flight safety.
